Everything You Need to Know About Trees

With the recent Ontario wide storm so many trees were toppled over and caused a lot of property damage. So we thought it would be a good time to talk about how to properly care for your new trees, if you’ve chosen to replant some of the fallen ones.

Here in Ottawa, we are fortunate to have many different types of trees that can thrive on our properties. Whether you’re looking to add some curb appeal to your home, or add a little shade, or simply want to enjoy the natural beauty that trees can provide, there are many reasons to consider planting one on your property.

Let’s talk about some tips, regulations and best practices when planting on your property.

Planting a Tree

When it comes to choosing the right trees for your Ottawa property, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, consider the amount of space you have available. You’ll also want to think about the type of soil you have and whether or not your preferred tree will need full sun or partial shade. Additionally, it’s important to make sure you’re choosing a tree that is native to our area, and one that can withstand our climate. It’s also  important to verify the depth at which the roots could grow and not to plant too close to the home, a septic system or swimming pool as large deep roots can cause damage to your property.

Once you’ve decided on the right tree for your property, the next step is to plant it properly. This means digging a hole that is twice as wide as the tree’s root ball and just as deep. You’ll also want to mix some compost into the hole before planting the tree. Doing this will help the tree to get off to a good start and encourage healthy growth. If this sounds like too much hassle, there are many professionals who can help.

Maintaining a Tree

There are some maintenance responsibilities that come with taking care of a tree. Once your tree is planted, be sure to water it regularly, especially during dry periods. Additionally, you’ll want to fertilize your tree each year so that it can reach its full potential. You’ll need to prune your tree regularly to remove dead or diseased branches. You should also have your tree checked by a certified arborist every few years to ensure that it’s healthy and growing properly. If your tree drops leaves, raking will be important as it will help keep your lawn healthy while giving an overall boost in curb appeal.

Planting Regulations

Ottawa has many city regulations surrounding the planting (and removal) of trees. This is because certain types in the wrong places could potentially disrupt city operations, harm public property or negatively affect the surrounding ecosystem. Always be sure to check the bylaws if you are planting at your home, there may be rules to follow depending on your neighbourhood.

Protection Regulations

There are certain trees you may not be allowed to remove from your property without direct permission. The City of Ottawa also has an informational article highlighting laws and procedures.

Happy planting!

Trees can be a beautiful and welcome addition to any property. They provide shade, curb appeal and through doing so can increase your home’s value. When planting a tree on your Ottawa property, it’s important to choose the right tree for the space you have available. Be sure to follow proper planting and maintenance procedures so that your tree can reach its full potential. Make sure to familiarize yourself with city regulations surrounding the planting and protection of trees. By doing all of the above, you can be sure that you are taking the best care possible.
